Android Icon FAQs
Google Play requires a 512×512px high-resolution icon. For the app itself, you need multiple sizes for different screen densities: 48×48 (mdpi), 72×72 (hdpi), 96×96 (xhdpi), 144×144 (xxhdpi), and 192×192 (xxxhdpi). Icon Maker generates all required sizes automatically.
Adaptive icons (Android 8.0+) consist of two layers: a foreground and background. This allows device manufacturers to apply different masks (circle, squircle, rounded square). Icon Maker creates properly layered assets with the correct safe zones so your icon looks great on any device.
The safe zone is the inner 66% of the icon (72dp of the 108dp icon). Critical visual elements should stay within this area to avoid being clipped by different mask shapes. Icon Maker positions your icon content within the safe zone automatically.
Google Play accepts PNG or JPEG for the high-res icon, but PNG is recommended. For adaptive icons in your app, you need PNG files organized by density in your res/mipmap folders. Icon Maker exports everything in PNG format, properly organized for Android Studio.
